This concept

This module introduces digital vision and image processing tools to express students' vision and creatively reinterpret the world through digital visual images.

This module provides students with the concepts, practices and key skills and knowledge of digital images and the use of Photoshop to generate digitally generated and manipulated images.

Students will develop their knowledge and skills in digital imaging and manipulation through a series of lectures, demonstrations and practical exercises.

They will be assessed practically throughout the semester in the form of projects and exercises. Students will then present and submit a final final project and/or work (portfolio) to demonstrate their ability to solve communication problems using appropriate software and hardware as a form of final assessment.

WEEK2

FOCAL POINT

A key element to any good composition is a strong focal point, as it helps your viewers’ eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of your design first.

SCALE & HIERARCHY

Scale is often used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements, thus signifying their importance to the communication.

https://digitalsynopsis.com/design/visual-hierarchy-graphic-design-principles/

BALANCE THE ELEMENTS

A good technique for mastering asymmetrical balance is to think of each element as having a ‘weight’ to it.

Smaller objects might ‘weigh’ less than larger objects, and heavily textured elements might ‘weigh’ more than flatly colored elements.

WHITE SPACE

White space is mostly known as “empty space” to balance up the main focus of a composition.

White space when used strategically can help boost your design’s clarity and overall look by balancing out the more complicated and busy parts of your composition with space that helps your design to breathe.

Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds is the process of dividing an image into thirds, using two horizontal and two vertical lines. This imaginary grid yields nine parts with four intersection points.

When you position the most important elements of your image at these intersection points, you produce a much more natural image. It is also suggested that any horizon is placed on either the top horizontal line or bottom horizontal line.

The Rule of Thirds is a way to:

  • Use composition techniques that are in line with what’s naturally pleasing to the eye.

  • Creatively use negative space.

  • Create conversation between the subject and background.

Golden Ratio

The Golden Ratio is a mathematical ratio. It is commonly found in nature, and when used in a design, it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

https://www.canva.com/learn/what-is-the-golden-ratio/

In design, the Golden Ratio boils down to aesthetics — creating and appreciating a sense of beauty through harmony and proportion. When applied to design, the Golden Ratio provides a sense of artistry

The Golden Ratio is a useful guideline for determining dimensions of the layout. One very simple way to apply the Golden Ratio is to set your dimensions to 1:1.618

WEEK3

Introduction to Photoshop

Tool Box

Photoshop provides several tool sets in the Toolbox, and you can expand the tool sets to reveal additional tools.

Marquee Selection Tools

Select and Mask

Lasso Tool

The Lasso Tool allow you to draw and pinpoint specific areas of a document.

If you like drawing with pencil and paper or cutting and pasting objects from a photo, then you will love the Lasso Tool.

When you click on the Lasso Tool from the Toolbar, you will see three different tool options:

Lasso

Polygonal Lasso

Magnetic Lasso

The lasso tool is great for using with graphics tablets because it is similar to a pencil. Unlike a mouse or trackpad, a graphics tablet can provide a better sense of flow when drawing and selecting.

Pen Tool

When it comes to creating a path from scratch, the pen tool is the most common choice. The pen tool is how you add these points, and the way you drag the tool while creating the points determines how they look. Remember, the fewer points, the smoother the path.

Variation of Pen Tool

1. Straight line paths

2. U shaped curves

3. Simple S curves

4. Complex S curves

WEEK4

Adjustment Layer& Filters

The Adjustment Layer in Photoshop is a set of very useful, non-destructive image editing tools that can add color and tone adjustments to an image without permanently changing its pixels. With the adjustment layer, you can edit and discard your adjustments or restore the original image at any time. This will make your workflow in Photoshop more flexible and efficient and is an absolute must know.

When you add a adjustment layer to your image, a new layer will appear in your image panel and the specific adjustment type you have selected will pop up. The Properties panel will allow you to modify your adjustment layer, which in turn will modify your image.

2. LEVEL

3. CURVES

4. EXPOSURE

5. SELECTIVE COLOR

Filters

Using filters to edit photos is an essential element of Adobe's graphics editor. There are filters to change colors, add blur or create entirely new image effects. Photoshop offers an almost unlimited variety of filters for this purpose.

WEEK5

EXPOSURE

In photography, exposure is the amount of light which reaches your camera sensor or film.

The main parts of the camera:

  1. Camera body:

  • Shutter

  • Image sensor

  • LCD screen

  1. Camera lens:

  • Aperture/ Iris

The camera body is a light proof box.

  1. IRIS

  2. SHUTTER SPEED

  3. ISO

LENS PERSPECTIVE

The are wide angle lens, standard lens and tele lens.

Appropriate lens provided desire framing, lens choice affects angle of view.

Different lenses are designed for different for different purposes. Lenses can be categorized by FOCAL LENGTH.

Wide angle lens is especially useful for landscape photography or street photography. With wide angle lenses, almost everything is in focus, unless your subject is very close to the lens.

Standard lens offer a fairly accurate representation of what the human eye sees, both in terms of visual angle and perspective.

Images created by standard lens are perceived as more natural than those taken with other types of camera lenses.

Tele lenses are great for isolating a subject that is far away.

Tele lenses allow you to photograph subjects from a distance thanks to their magnification.

DSLR V.S SMARTPHONE

PRO

  • Familiar with device

  • Good quality

  • Easy to learn

CON

  • Still limited

  • Good but not great

  • Non-ergonomic shape

Smartphones vs Cameras = Convenience vs Quality

DSLR cameras are designed to capture images. Phones are designed to carry out a multitude of functions.

Phone cameras are very limited by size. The size of the lens and the size of the sensor that captures the photos. Entry-level DSLR have much larger lenses and sensors than mobile phones do.
