Final Project – Storyboard and Animatic

INTRODUCTION

FINAL PROJECT

For this task,We need to draw a short animated story with a length of between one minute and three minutes. We need to start writing on the basis of the previously designed script, from the draft of the lens to the design of the split lens to draw the finished product. The finished product needs to have a color relationship of black, white and gray.

Objective: The objective of this project is to produce a 1-3 minute animatics storyboard based on your approved short animation. Requirements: The animatic storyboard production must be based on

the proposed story ideas developed for Project 1

Script

PROCESS

I read my story again, extracting key information from the script, and each sketch should be enough to express the general information.
In order to avoid lengthy sketches, I made 9 sketches on the drawing board.

Deliverables

The final presentation may be different from the current design, but a more detailed design can help us save more time in the final production process.

Storyboard

  • Using any editing software such as Adobe Premiere, create a new project with 1280 x 720 size and 24fps framerate.
  • Import the image of each panel and arrange them according to the panel sequence.
  • Put the right estimated duration of each panel. Preview and edit back and forth to get the right pacing, continuity and screen direction.
  • Animate the character action and camera works, replacing the arrow direction in the storyboard. You may have different layers of the shot such as background, prop, character etc to make it animatable in the editing software.
  • Animate the transitions (fade in, fade out, dissolve etc.)
  • Put the audio elements such as music background that can enhance the emotion of the shot, voice over (dialogue / monologue) and sound effects.
  • Indicate of each panel number and timecode through text overlays
  • Output the video as mp4 format

REFLECTION

Experiences
When I finished my final project in Film Studies and Photography, I felt an opportunity to develop my creativity and skills. We start with ideas that work well as visual stories. Like the first project, I did it alone, which gave me the freedom to experiment with different ideas without external constraints. However, it also meant that I had to make all the decisions alone. It took a lot of effort to draw the shooting scripts and make the animation previews, but the finished process was very fulfilling for me. A big challenge is to keep the story coherent while ensuring that the timing and transitions between scenes flow smoothly. Despite the difficulties encountered along the way, completing the project made me feel very proud and made me understand the importance of the planning stage even more.

Observations
During this project, I deeply appreciated the importance of planning and organization, which is crucial to the success of visual storytelling. The shooting script is like a blueprint, which not only helps to make the animation preview, but also ensures the consistency of the content. I've noticed that even small adjustments in timing or changes in the way a shot is presented can completely change the emotional expression of a scene. Working with others provides different ideas, while working alone allows me to focus more on my own goals and learn to solve problems on my own. I also observed that music and sound effects played a key role in enhancing the atmosphere of the animation preview. These elements, though often overlooked, are very important for bringing the picture to life.

Findings
The project reinforced the importance of paying attention to the details of storytelling. I learned that a well-designed shooting script not only saves time in the later stages, but also serves as a communication tool for sharing ideas. Another key finding is the importance of being proficient with software tools, which makes the production of animation previews smoother and more efficient. I realized that timing and pacing were critical to capturing the audience's attention, and I needed to work on that even more. In addition, working on projects independently has made me more tenacious and improved my problem-solving skills, which are very important for working in the creative field. Overall, this experience has allowed me to grow as a filmmaker and provided me with valuable skills and knowledge for future projects.
