INTRODUCTION

FINAL PROJECT

We need to design an original 3D robot model, suitable for use in animation, games or digital art fields. This robot should have features similar to those of humans, such as two legs, two hands, and so on. Designing an unmanned aircraft, machine design or similar designs are not acceptable.

I want to create a robot that can serve the family because I have watched some related videos.

I found that the cute and small robots in household robots are more popular among people.
But I wanted to create a more practical robot. I drew on their common feature of having many arcs and then worked on it independently.

I basically complete the operation by squeezing. To make the shape smoother, I add a little bit of smoothing.

The arms are mainly used for spherical and cylindrical shapes. By squeezing and assembling them, I can form the shapes I desire.

I had some difficulties in making the feet part. I searched for many tutorials online and followed them to create it.

The process of making the legs and arms is similar, so I'm quite proficient at it. However, the legs require more shapes and it will take some time to assemble them.

Experience Summary

In this project, I used Autodesk Maya to design and create a humanoid robot model. The entire process involved collecting reference images, modeling, UV unwrapping, and organizing the project files for the final presentation. This was my first time creating a complete robot model from scratch, and during the process, I deeply realized the significance of every step - from the initial conception to the final presentation.

Observation and Reflection

By referring to many pictures of robots designed by various artists, I gained more inspiration in the structural design, which enabled me to better shape a convincing mechanical appearance. Adopting a humanoid design made it easier for me to consider the movement logic and balance structure of the robot. During the modeling process, maintaining a clean topology not only made the model easier to manage but also prepared it for subsequent binding and animation. Although the UV unwrapping process was rather cumbersome, it significantly improved the clarity and quality of the subsequent material processing.

Personal Insights and Discoveries

Proactive planning is crucial for minimizing problems in the later stages. Whether it's the initial structural sketches before the start, or directly building the basic form in Maya, they all help to clarify the design direction. Creating mood boards allows me to organize my thoughts and maintain a consistent style throughout the design process. Standardizing the naming of files and objects, as well as clearly categorizing resources, makes the entire production process more efficient. Finally, exporting the Playblast video in a standardized manner ensures the professionalism of the presentation of the results.
